Introduction
Nirmala Sitharaman is an indian economist ,and a senior bjp politician and current finance and corporate affairs minister of the government of india from the year 2019.She has presented 6 Union Budgets and 1 Interim Budget from 2019 to 2024 and today she presented her 8th Union budget . We are going to discuss about that in this blog… let’s start by the remark she made previously Caramel Popcorn is not a namkeen , so it will be taxed at 18% , She has received a lot blacklash and criticism for squeezing the middle class and helping corporations by tax breaks . She has been called “nirmala tai ” , “tax tai”,“basuli tai” among others for her tax approaches India’s Budget 2025-26 has arrived with massive tax cuts, a nuclear energy revolution, MSME growth incentives, and a record-breaking infrastructure push. This budget is supposed to position India as a global economic powerhouse in very difficult world scenario,
1️⃣ Personal Income Tax Relief
“Democracy, Demography and Demand are the key support pillars in our journey towards Viksit Bharat. The middle class provides strength for India’s growth. This Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi has always believed in the admirable energy and ability of the middle class in nation building. In recognition of their contribution, we have periodically reduced their tax burden. Right after 2014, the ‘Nil tax’ slab was raised to ₹2.5 lakh, which was further raised to ₹5 lakh in 2019 and to ₹7 lakh in 2023. This is reflective of our Government’s trust in middle-class taxpayers. I am now happy to announce that there will be no income tax payable up to an income of ₹12 lakh (i.e. average income of ₹1 lakh per month other than special rate income such as capital gains) under the new regime. This limit will be ₹12.75 lakh for salaried taxpayers, due to a standard deduction of ₹75,000.”

Previous Criticism of the Tax approach in India
Raghav Chadha, an MP for the Aam Aadmi Party, had earlier criticized the Modi administration in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday. Chadha performed a poem in Parliament that poked fun at the tax structure of the BJP-led NDA government. Chadha said in Hindi that “everything is being taxed by the government. The act of waking up, sleeping, and crying are all subject to taxes. Books and ink, vegetables, vehicles, homes, and the purchase and sale of goods are all subject to taxes.” —reference
He has also said that the citizens of India paid taxes like in europe and got facilities like in somalia—reference
Key Changes in Personal Income Tax
- No income tax for earnings up to ₹12 lakh (₹12.75 lakh for salaried individuals with deductions).
- Revised tax slabs: Lower rates for higher earnings, boosting disposable income, which will help the majority of salaried middle-class economies.
- Eases financial burden on middle-class taxpayers, allowing for more investment and consumption.
Income Tax Slabs – New Regime (2025-26)
The 2025-26 Budget introduces revised income tax slabs with significant tax relief for middle-class taxpayers.
Income Tax Slabs (New Regime)
| Income Range (₹) | Tax Rate (%) | Effective Tax After Rebate |
|---|---|---|
| 0 - 4,00,000 | Nil | Nil |
| 4,00,001 - 8,00,000 | 5% | Nil (Covered under rebate) |
| 8,00,001 - 12,00,000 | 10% | Nil (Covered under rebate) |
| 12,00,001 - 16,00,000 | 15% | 15% on income above ₹12L |
| 16,00,001 - 20,00,000 | 20% | 20% on income above ₹16L |
| 20,00,001 - 24,00,000 | 25% | 25% on income above ₹20L |
| Above 24,00,000 | 30% | 30% on income above ₹24L |
Example Tax Calculations
Tax rebate is a refund on taxes when the tax liability is less than the taxes the individual has paid. Taxpayers usually get a refund on their income tax if they have paid more than what they owe. The tax refund money is given back at the end of the financial year.
In India, you can get a refund of the excess tax along with the interest. To claim the income tax refund one must file the income tax return within a specified period. Most often you get tax refunds as your income falls within the tax slab that gets modified every year as per the directions of the government.
Let’s understand this with the following examples
Example 1: Income = ₹12 Lakh
- Tax Before Rebate:
- 10% on ₹8-12 lakh = ₹80,000
- Tax After Rebate:
- ₹80,000 fully covered by rebate
- Total Tax Payable: ₹0
this means you don’t have to pay income taxes but you need to file tax,Government stills need to know how much you earn
Example 2: Income = ₹15 Lakh
- First ₹12 lakh → Tax-Free (covered by rebate)
- Remaining ₹3 lakh (₹12L - ₹15L):
- 15% of ₹3,00,000 = ₹45,000
- Total Tax Payable: ₹45,000
See you need to only pay taxes after 12 lakh only and then pay for the additional money you make
Example 3: Income = ₹20 Lakh
- First ₹12 lakh → Tax-Free (covered by rebate)
- Next ₹4 lakh (₹12L - ₹16L) at 15%:
- 15% of ₹4,00,000 = ₹60,000
- Next ₹4 lakh (₹16L - ₹20L) at 20%:
- 20% of ₹4,00,000 = ₹80,000
- Total Tax Payable: ₹1,40,000
This is how Progressive tax is calculated in the new tax regime
